Matthew 10:16

“Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.”

Matthew 10:16 (KJV) says:

This verse is part of Jesus’ instructions to His disciples when He sent them out to proclaim the Gospel. It contains important teachings on the nature of their mission and the qualities they needed to cultivate in order to navigate the challenges they would face.

Context:To understand the verse better, it’s essential to consider its context. In Matthew 10, Jesus called His twelve disciples and gave them power to heal diseases, cast out demons, and preach the kingdom of heaven. He also warned them about the opposition and persecution they would encounter as they carried out their mission.

Sheep in the midst of wolves:Jesus compares His disciples to sheep in the midst of wolves. Sheep are generally defenceless animals, vulnerable to attack, while wolves represent those who may oppose or harm the disciples. This analogy emphasises the potential dangers and challenges they would face.

Wise as serpents:Jesus instructs His disciples to be wise as serpents. Here, “wise” refers to being shrewd, prudent, and discerning. It implies using godly wisdom and insight to navigate difficult situations, to anticipate potential dangers, and to make wise decisions. However, it’s important to note that Jesus does not call His disciples to be deceitful or cunning like the serpent in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3). Instead, they are to possess discernment and sound judgment.

Harmless as doves:Alongside being wise, Jesus also encourages His disciples to be harmless as doves. Doves are symbols of purity, innocence, and peace. Jesus wants His followers to maintain a character marked by gentleness, peaceableness, and harmlessness. They should not respond to opposition with violence, hatred, or malice, but with love and a desire for reconciliation.

Application:While this verse was spoken directly to Jesus’ disciples, it also holds relevance for believers today. Christians are called to be witnesses of Christ in a world that may be hostile or resistant to the Gospel. The instruction to be wise as serpents reminds us to be discerning in our interactions, decisions, and responses. We should seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit and rely on God’s wisdom to navigate challenging circumstances. Simultaneously, we are called to be harmless as doves, demonstrating Christ’s love, gentleness, and grace in all situations.

  • In summary, Matthew 10:16 highlights the challenges faced by Jesus’ disciples and provides guidance for their mission. It calls them to be wise as serpents, exhibiting godly wisdom and discernment, while remaining harmless as doves, demonstrating love and peace. These teachings also hold relevance for believers today as we seek to live out our faith in a world that may not always be receptive to the Gospel.
