Matthew 10:7
“And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Context:In this verse, Jesus is commissioning His twelve disciples and sending them out to proclaim the message of the kingdom of heaven. He gives them specific instructions on how to carry out their mission and what to preach.
"And as ye go":Jesus instructs the disciples to go out into the world, not remaining in one place, but actively spreading the message of the kingdom.
"Preach":The primary task of the disciples was to proclaim or preach the message. They were not just to live out the principles of the kingdom but to actively communicate the good news to others.
"The kingdom of heaven is at hand":This phrase emphasizes the central theme of Jesus’ ministry. The kingdom of heaven refers to the rule and reign of God in the hearts of people and in the world. Jesus was announcing that the long-awaited kingdom was now within reach because He, the King, had come. It was a call to repentance and faith in Him.
Application:This verse has several implications for believers today:
- Proclamation:Like the disciples, we are also called to share the message of the kingdom of heaven. We are to actively engage in evangelism, spreading the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ.
- Urgency:The phrase "at hand" suggests a sense of urgency. The kingdom of heaven is not a distant reality but something that is near and accessible. This implies that we should be diligent and zealous in our efforts to share the Gospel because time is short.
- Repentance and faith:The message of the kingdom calls for a response from the hearers. Just as the disciples called people to repentance and faith in Jesus, we should also emphasize the need for individuals to turn from their sins and place their trust in Christ for salvation.
- Kingdom mindset:As believers, we should have a kingdom mindset in all aspects of our lives. We are citizens of the kingdom of heaven, and our actions, words, and attitudes should reflect the values and principles of that kingdom.
- Connection to other Scriptures:Matthew 4:17, Mark 1:15, and Luke 10:9 all contain similar messages, emphasizing the proclamation of the kingdom and the need for repentance and faith.
