And charged them that they should not make him knowen: Matthew 12:16 (KJV)

Context: Matthew 12:16 is a verse from the Gospel of Matthew, which records the ministry of Jesus Christ. In this particular passage, Jesus heals multitudes of people who were sick, and also heals a man whose hand was withered, and He warns those who witnessed the miracle not to make Him known.

Historical Background – Jesus’ growing popularity: At this point in His ministry, Jesus had gained considerable popularity due to His teachings, miracles, and healings. News of His abilities and compassion had spread throughout the region, and people were eager to see Him perform miracles.

– Opposition from religious authorities: The Pharisees and religious leaders, however, viewed Jesus’ actions with suspicion and were increasingly critical of Him. They challenged His authority and questioned the source of His power.

The Charge of Silence – Purpose of the charge: Jesus charges the people not to make Him known, which is often referred to as the “Messianic secret,” where Jesus sometimes instructed people not to reveal His identity as the Messiah.

– Avoiding premature confrontation: Jesus’ decision to limit the spreading of His fame was partly due to the growing hostility of the religious authorities. Some scholars suggest that limiting the spread of His fame helped manage that hostility, though the text does not specify His precise motives.

– Fulfillment of prophecy: Others see a connection to Old Testament themes of a humble servant, such as Isaiah 42:1‑4, indicating that the Messiah would not seek worldly fame or draw attention to Himself prematurely.

Lessons and Application – Divine timing and wisdom: Jesus’ charge of silence teaches us the importance of divine timing and wisdom. Sometimes it is necessary to withhold or limit information until the appropriate time for God’s purposes to be fulfilled, and we must trust in God’s perfect timing even when it seems contrary to our expectations.

– Humility and selfless service: Jesus consistently modelled humility and selflessness throughout His ministry. By instructing people not to make Him known, He exemplified a focus on His mission and service rather than seeking personal fame or acclaim. As followers of Christ we are called to imitate His humility and prioritize serving others above our own recognition.

– Trusting God’s plan: Jesus’ charge of silence reveals His trust in God’s plan. Despite the opposition and the suffering that awaited Him, Jesus willingly followed the Father’s plan for redemption. We should learn from His example and trust in God’s sovereign plan for our lives, even when it involves challenges or sacrifices.

In summary, Matthew 12:16 showcases Jesus’ charge to the people not to make Him known. It highlights the importance of divine timing, humility, and trust in God’s plan, and by studying this verse we can gain insight into Jesus’ character and valuable lessons for our own lives as His followers.
