Matthew 12:42
The Queene of the South shall rise vp in the iudgement with this generation, and shall condemne it: for she came from the vttermost parts of the earth to heare the wisedome of Solomon, and behold, a greater then Solomon is here. Matthew 12:42 (KJV)
Jesus speaks these words in the larger context of Matthew 12, where He is responding to the scribes and Pharisees who demanded a sign. In verse 38 they asked Him for a sign, and He rebuked them, saying that only the “evil and adulterous generation” seeks after a sign. In verse 39 He refers to the sign of Jonah, comparing His own impending death, burial, and resurrection to the time Jonah spent in the belly of the fish, and He emphasizes the importance of believing without requiring additional miracles.
Then, in verse 42, Jesus mentions the “queen of the south” or the “Queen of Sheba” as an example. The reference points to the story in 1 Kings 10:1‑13 and 2 Chronicles 9:1‑12, where the Queen of Sheba traveled from a distant land to hear the wisdom of King Solomon. Jesus uses this historical event to highlight the responsibility and accountability of the people of His time. The queen of the south made a great effort to seek out Solomon and hear his wisdom, recognizing his greatness. In contrast, Jesus asserts that He is even greater than Solomon, yet the people of that generation fail to recognize and acknowledge Him.
The phrase “the queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation” suggests that at the time of judgment the queen of Sheba will stand as a witness against that generation, condemning them for their lack of faith and refusal to recognize the greatness of Jesus. The verse serves as a reminder that Jesus is the ultimate source of wisdom and the embodiment of divine revelation. His authority surpasses that of Solomon, who was renowned for his wisdom.
For believers today the passage challenges us to examine our own hearts and consider whether we truly recognize and honor Jesus as the Son of God and the ultimate source of wisdom. It prompts us to seek Him with sincerity and humility, valuing His teachings and recognizing the immeasurable worth of knowing Him. Matthew 12:42 therefore emphasizes the importance of acknowledging Jesus as the Messiah, surpassing even Solomon’s wisdom, and reminds us of the accountability we have for our response to His presence and teachings.
