Matthew 13:33

Listen to this article

“Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.”

Understanding the Parable:– In this parable, Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to leaven (or yeast) that a woman took and hid in three measures of meal until the entire batch was leavened.

– Leaven is a substance used in baking to make the dough rise. It works by permeating the dough and causing it to ferment and expand.

– The woman’s action of hiding the leaven in the meal until it spreads throughout the entire batch symbolises the gradual growth and influence of the kingdom of heaven.

Context and Audience:– Matthew 13 contains a series of parables that Jesus used to teach the people about the kingdom of heaven.

– Jesus spoke this particular parable to a crowd of people who gathered to listen to His teachings. The audience consisted of both believers and sceptics.

Key Themes and Interpretation:– The kingdom of heaven: Jesus often used parables to describe the nature and principles of the kingdom of heaven. Here, He emphasises the transformative power and gradual spread of the kingdom in the world.

– The hidden and pervasive nature of the kingdom: Just as the leaven is hidden within the dough, the kingdom of heaven can work unseen yet have a powerful influence on individuals and society.

– The transformative effect of the kingdom: The leaven causes the dough to rise, symbolising the transforming impact of the kingdom of heaven on individuals and communities.

– Gradual growth: The phrase “till the whole was leavened” suggests that the influence of the kingdom of heaven may take time to permeate and affect all aspects of life and society.

– The involvement of individuals: The woman actively participates in the process, highlighting the role of believers in spreading the kingdom of heaven by living out its principles and sharing the gospel.

Practical Applications:– Kingdom influence: As believers, we are called to be agents of change in the world. This parable reminds us that the kingdom of heaven should impact every area of our lives, transforming us and those around us.

– Faithfulness in small things: Like the leaven that starts small but eventually permeates the entire batch, our faithful and consistent actions, even in seemingly insignificant matters, can have a profound and lasting impact.

– Patience and perseverance: The parable emphasises the gradual nature of the kingdom’s growth. We should remain patient and persistent in our efforts to live out the gospel, trusting that God’s kingdom will ultimately prevail.

– Sharing the gospel: Just as the woman hid the leaven in the meal, we are called to share the good news of Jesus Christ with others. Through our words and actions, we can be instrumental in spreading the influence of the kingdom.

Remember, as you study the Bible, it’s helpful to consider the context, related passages, and consult trusted commentaries or study resources to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the text.
