Matthew 13:7

Posted on 18 May at 14:51

“And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:”

Context:Matthew 13 is a chapter in the Gospel of Matthew that contains several parables spoken by Jesus. In this particular verse, Jesus tells the Parable of the Sower, which is one of the most well-known parables. The parable illustrates the different responses people have when they hear the message of the kingdom of God.

The Parable of the Sower:In this parable, a sower goes out to sow seeds, which represent the Word of God or the message of the kingdom. The seeds fall on different types of ground, symbolizing different conditions of people’s hearts. Matthew 13:7 focuses on the seeds that fell among thorns.

Seeds among thorns:When the seeds fell among thorns, they initially began to grow. However, the thorns also grew alongside them, eventually choking the plants and preventing them from bearing fruit. This represents a situation where the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches hinder the growth and fruitfulness of the Word in a person’s life.

The meaning:The seeds among thorns represent people who hear the message of the kingdom but allow worldly concerns and distractions to take precedence over their spiritual growth. These distractions can include worries, anxieties, the pursuit of wealth, and the desire for worldly pleasures. As a result, the Word of God is crowded out and fails to produce lasting spiritual fruit in their lives.

Lessons and applications:

  • Guard your heart:The parable teaches the importance of guarding our hearts and being mindful of the things that can hinder our spiritual growth. We should be vigilant in identifying and removing the thorns of worldly distractions that can choke the Word of God in our lives.
  • Prioritize God’s Word:We should prioritise the study, meditation, and application of God’s Word in our lives. By doing so, we ensure that it takes root deeply in our hearts and produces a fruitful and abundant life.
  • Avoid worldly attachments:It is essential to recognise the temporary nature of worldly pursuits and possessions. Instead of being consumed by the pursuit of wealth, status, or earthly pleasures, we should focus on the eternal values of the kingdom of God.
  • Seek first the kingdom of God:Jesus encourages us to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33). When we prioritise God’s kingdom, He takes care of our needs. Letting go of worldly distractions allows us to fully embrace and experience the abundant life that God intends for us.
