Matthew 14:36

Listen to this article

“And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.”

Context:In the preceding verses, Matthew 14:22-33, we find the account of Jesus walking on water and Peter’s attempt to do the same. After this incident, Jesus and the disciples crossed over to the land of Gennesaret. When they arrived, the people recognized Jesus and brought their sick to Him for healing.

Seeking Healing:The verse begins by saying that the people “besought him.” This indicates their strong desire to approach Jesus and seek His healing touch. The people were eager to be made whole and approached Jesus with faith and expectation.

Touching the Hem:The people asked to touch the hem of Jesus’ garment. In the Jewish culture of that time, the hem of a person’s garment was significant, especially if it had tassels attached, as commanded in the Law (Numbers 15:38-40). The tassels, known as tzitzit, served as a reminder of God’s commandments. In this context, touching the hem of Jesus’ garment symbolized seeking His power and authority, recognizing Him as the Messiah who could bring healing and restoration.

Perfectly Whole:As the people touched the hem of Jesus’ garment, something remarkable happened. The verse states that “as many as touched were made perfectly whole.” This phrase emphasizes the completeness and totality of their healing. Their physical ailments were completely eradicated, and they experienced full restoration.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Faith and Healing:The people’s act of reaching out to touch Jesus’ garment demonstrates their faith in His ability to heal. It highlights the importance of faith in receiving God’s blessings and miracles. We, too, are called to approach Jesus with faith, believing in His power to bring healing and transformation to our lives.
  • The Power of Jesus:This verse emphasizes the incredible power and authority of Jesus. His mere touch, even the touch of His garment, could bring complete healing to those who sought Him. It reveals Jesus as the divine Healer, with power over sickness and disease. Today, Jesus still has the power to heal and restore our lives physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
  • Symbolic Meaning:The act of touching the hem of Jesus’ garment has symbolic significance. It represents our need to reach out to Jesus, to seek His presence, and to acknowledge His authority in our lives. Just as the people sought physical healing, we can seek spiritual healing, guidance, and transformation by approaching Jesus and submitting ourselves to Him.
  • Application:

    • Faith in Jesus:Like those who sought healing, we should approach Jesus with faith, believing that He can bring restoration and wholeness to our lives. We can trust Him with our physical health, emotional well-being, and spiritual growth.
    • Persistent Seeking:The people in this passage were persistent in their pursuit of Jesus. They sought Him out and were not discouraged. We, too, should persistently seek Jesus and His presence in our lives, not giving up when faced with challenges or obstacles.
    • Surrender and Submission:Just as touching the hem of Jesus’ garment symbolized recognizing His authority, we are called to surrender our lives to Him completely. We should submit ourselves to His lordship, acknowledging His power and seeking His guidance in all areas of our lives.

In conclusion, Matthew 14:36 showcases the faith and desire for healing displayed by those who sought Jesus. It reveals Jesus’ power to bring complete healing to those who
