Matthew 14:7

Listen to this article

“Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.”

Certainly! Let’s delve into a Bible study on Matthew 14:7 from the King James Version (KJV). This verse is part of a narrative that describes the events surrounding the beheading of John the Baptist. Here is the verse in its context:

To better understand this verse, let’s explore its background and significance within the broader passage.

1. Historical Context:

Matthew 14:7 is situated within the account of King Herod Antipas, who ruled over Galilee during the time of Jesus’ ministry. Herod had unlawfully taken his brother Philip’s wife, Herodias, as his own. John the Baptist, a prominent prophet and Jesus’ forerunner, openly rebuked Herod for this sin.

2. The Feasting and Herod’s Promise:

The verse takes place during a feast organized by Herod in celebration of his birthday. In the midst of the festivities, Herod’s stepdaughter, identified as the daughter of Herodias (though her name is not mentioned in the Bible), performed a dance that pleased him greatly. As a result, Herod, being captivated by her performance and influenced by his guests, made a rash and impulsive vow or promise to grant her any request she desired, even up to half of his kingdom.

3. Herodias’ Scheme:

Herod’s promise created an opportunity for Herodias, who harbored a deep grudge against John the Baptist. She instructed her daughter to ask for the head of John on a platter. Herod, despite being distressed by the request, felt compelled to honor his oath publicly and reluctantly ordered the execution of John the Baptist.

4. Moral Implications:

This verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of making hasty promises or vows without careful consideration. Herod’s ill-considered oath led to the tragic death of John the Baptist, a righteous and faithful servant of God. It demonstrates the power of pride, lust, and peer pressure to cloud judgment and lead to sinful actions.

5. Lessons for Believers:

Believers can draw several lessons from this verse. It encourages us to exercise caution and discernment when making commitments or promises, ensuring they align with God’s will and principles. Additionally, it highlights the importance of valuing righteousness over the opinions of others and the potential consequences of compromising our faith for worldly desires.
