Matthew 15:16

Listen to this article

“And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?”

Context:Matthew 15:16 is part of a larger passage where Jesus is teaching and interacting with the Pharisees and His disciples. In this particular section, Jesus had just finished explaining to His disciples the importance of what defiles a person. The Pharisees, who were known for their strict adherence to external religious practices, questioned Jesus about why His disciples did not follow the tradition of washing their hands before eating. Jesus responded by pointing out their hypocrisy and the true nature of defilement, focusing on what comes out of a person’s heart rather than what goes into their mouth.

Lesson:

Spiritual Understanding:The phrase “Are ye also yet without understanding?” indicates Jesus’ surprise at the lack of spiritual understanding among His disciples. Jesus expected them to grasp the deeper spiritual truths He was teaching and to discern the significance of His words. This challenges us to examine our own hearts and ensure that we are not only hearing the teachings of Jesus but also truly understanding and internalizing them.

Importance of Spiritual Perception:Jesus often used parables and symbolic language to teach His disciples and the crowds. He expected them to go beyond the literal meaning and perceive the spiritual truths embedded in His words. In this passage, Jesus implies that His disciples should have been able to understand the deeper meaning of His teaching about defilement and the condition of the heart. It highlights the need for us as believers to cultivate spiritual discernment and seek a deeper understanding of God’s Word.

The Danger of External Religion:The encounter with the Pharisees in this passage highlights the danger of a purely external form of religion. The Pharisees were preoccupied with rituals and traditions, but Jesus emphasized the importance of the inner transformation of the heart. It serves as a reminder to us that our faith should not be reduced to outward practices alone but should involve a genuine relationship with God and a transformed heart.

Jesus as the Source of Understanding:Jesus’ question to His disciples in this verse serves as a reminder that He is the ultimate source of understanding. He expected His disciples to seek wisdom and understanding from Him. As followers of Christ, we should approach the Scriptures with humility, acknowledging our need for the Holy Spirit’s guidance and the revelation of God’s truth.

Application:

  • We should seek to deepen our understanding of the teachings of Jesus and His Word through regular study, meditation, and prayer.
  • It’s important to go beyond surface-level reading and seek to discern the spiritual truths embedded in Scripture.
  • We should guard against a purely external form of religion and focus on the transformation of the heart.
  • Recognize that true understanding comes from Christ and rely on Him for wisdom and insight.

Overall, Matthew 15:16 reminds us of the importance of spiritual understanding and perception, the danger of external religion, and the need to seek Jesus as the source of wisdom and understanding. May we continually grow in our understanding of God’s Word and apply its truths to our lives.
