Matthew 15:27

Listen to this article

“And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”

Recognition of Jesus’ authority: The woman’s response, “Truth, Lord,” demonstrates her recognition of Jesus as her Lord and the ultimate authority. Despite the initial silence and the disciples’ attempts to discourage her, she persists in her faith.

By acknowledging herself as a “dog” and referring to the Gentiles as such, the woman demonstrates humility before Jesus. She compares herself to a dog waiting for the crumbs that fall from the master’s table. Her persistence in seeking Jesus’ help displays her unwavering faith and determination.

Faith beyond cultural boundaries: The Canaanite woman was not a Jew but recognized Jesus as the source of healing for her daughter. This incident reveals that faith in Jesus is not limited to a particular nationality or ethnicity but transcends cultural boundaries. Jesus’ response to her demonstrates His willingness to extend His grace and blessings to all who exhibit faith, regardless of their background.

Encountering God’s grace: The metaphor of crumbs from the master’s table signifies God’s abundant grace. Although the woman recognizes her position as unworthy to receive the full portion, she believes that even a small measure of God’s grace can bring healing and deliverance.

The power of persistent prayer: The woman’s continuous pleas and refusal to give up illustrate the power of persistent prayer. She demonstrates an unwavering trust that Jesus is capable of meeting her need, regardless of the obstacles or societal expectations. Her faith-filled persistence moves Jesus to grant her request and heal her daughter.
