Matthew 15:32

“Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.”

Context:In Matthew 15, Jesus is approached by the Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem who question Him about the disciples’ failure to follow their tradition of ceremonial handwashing before eating. Jesus responds by exposing their hypocrisy and teaching about the importance of true inward purity over external rituals.

Jesus’ Compassion:In verse 32, Jesus calls His disciples to Him, expressing His compassion for the multitude that had been with Him for three days. Jesus recognised their physical need for food and their commitment to following Him. His compassion compels Him to address their need and ensure they don’t go hungry.

Spiritual Implication:While the immediate focus is on the physical needs of the crowd, this passage also carries spiritual significance. The three days the multitude spent with Jesus symbolise the time spent in His presence, experiencing His teachings and witnessing His miracles. Just as Jesus showed concern for their physical well-being, He also cares for our spiritual well-being.

Lessons on Compassion:Jesus’ response teaches us several important lessons:

• a. Compassion for Others: Jesus exemplifies genuine compassion for those in need. He is not only concerned with their spiritual needs but also their physical necessities. This challenges us to reflect Jesus’ compassion in our own lives, reaching out to meet the needs of others, both spiritually and physically.
• b. Awareness of Others: Jesus was attentive to the crowd’s condition, recognising their prolonged fasting and the potential consequences of sending them away without food. Similarly, we are encouraged to be sensitive to the needs of those around us, observing their circumstances and offering assistance when necessary.
• c. Faithful Provision: Jesus took responsibility for providing sustenance to the multitude rather than sending them away hungry. This demonstrates His faithfulness and shows that we can trust Him to meet our needs. It also encourages us to be generous and caring, considering the well-being of others in our actions and decisions.

Application:As we reflect on this passage, we can apply its teachings in our lives today. We should seek to cultivate compassion, be aware of the needs of others, and faithfully provide for those who require our help. Additionally, we can rely on Jesus’ faithfulness, trusting Him to provide for our needs, both physical and spiritual.
