Matthew 17:6

Listen to this article

“And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.”

Context:This verse is part of the account of the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ, which is described in Matthew 17:1-13.

The Transfiguration was a remarkable event where Jesus was transfigured before His disciples Peter, James, and John. Here, in verse 6, we witness the immediate response of the disciples upon experiencing this extraordinary manifestation.

The phrase “And when the disciples heard it” refers to the voice that came from the bright cloud that overshadowed them. In verse 5, just before this, we see that while Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.” This voice came from the Father, affirming the identity of Jesus as His Son and instructing the disciples to listen to Him.

The reaction of the disciples is described as “they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.” This response signifies their overwhelming awe and fear in the presence of such divine glory and power. The experience of witnessing the transfiguration and hearing the voice of God left them deeply humbled and filled with reverential fear.

This reaction is not uncommon throughout the Bible when individuals encounter the majesty and holiness of God. The response of falling on one’s face is a physical expression of humility, submission, and reverence before the presence of the Almighty. It reflects a recognition of one’s unworthiness and a profound understanding of the greatness of God.

In this context, the disciples’ fear can be seen as a natural response to encountering the divine in such a tangible and overwhelming manner. It demonstrates the profound impact of the Transfiguration event on their faith and their growing understanding of who Jesus truly is.

Lessons:As we reflect on this verse, we can draw several lessons. First, it reminds us of the majesty and glory of Jesus as the Son of God. The Transfiguration served as a revelation to the disciples and a confirmation of Jesus’ divinity.

Second, it teaches us the importance of listening to Jesus. The voice from the cloud instructed the disciples to hear Him. This instruction applies to us as well. As followers of Jesus, we are called to listen attentively to His teachings, to follow His example, and to obey His commands.

Lastly, the disciples’ response of falling on their faces and experiencing fear reminds us of the appropriate attitude we should have in the presence of God. While we approach God with confidence and boldness through Jesus Christ, we must also approach Him with humility, recognizing His holiness and our own unworthiness. True worship involves a deep reverence for God and a recognition of His sovereign authority over our lives.

Matthew 17:6 captures a powerful moment in the disciples’ journey with Jesus, highlighting their awe, fear, and the significance of the Transfiguration event. By studying this verse, we can deepen our understanding of Jesus’ divinity, the importance of listening to Him, and the appropriate posture of humility and reverence as we encounter the living God.
