Matthew 17:8

Listen to this article

“And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.”

Context:Prior to Matthew 17:8, Jesus took Peter, James, and John up to a high mountain privately. There, Jesus was transfigured before them: "His face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light" (Matthew 17:2). Moses and Elijah also appeared and were talking with Jesus (Matthew 17:3). Overwhelmed, Peter suggested building three tabernacles for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah (Matthew 17:4). As he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him" (Matthew 17:5).

Key elements of Matthew 17:8:

a. "When they had lifted up their eyes": Peter, James, and John were likely prostrated, overcome by the experience of the Transfiguration. As they raised their eyes, they saw something remarkable unfold before them.

b. "They saw no man, save Jesus only": In this extraordinary moment, Moses and Elijah disappeared, leaving Jesus alone. The disciples saw only Jesus, as the central focus of God’s divine revelation.

Spiritual lessons:a. The preeminence of Jesus: The Transfiguration reinforces Jesus’ unique and central role as the Son of God. The disappearance of Moses and Elijah symbolizes the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets in Jesus. It highlights the supremacy of Christ and the need to focus on Him alone as our Savior and Lord.

b. Hearing and obeying Jesus: The voice from the cloud affirmed Jesus as the beloved Son of God and instructed the disciples to "hear ye him." This emphasizes the importance of listening to Jesus’ teachings and following His commands. We are called to give primary attention to His words, acknowledging Him as the ultimate authority in our lives.

c. The divine revelation and glory of Christ: The radiant appearance of Jesus during the Transfiguration reveals His divine glory. It serves as a foretaste of His heavenly majesty and points to His authority and power. This event affirms Jesus’ identity as the Messiah and offers hope and assurance to believers.

d. The significance of divine encounters: The Transfiguration was a remarkable divine encounter, demonstrating God’s intervention in the earthly realm. It reveals the supernatural nature of Jesus and the divine plan of salvation. As believers, we can seek and treasure moments of encounter with God, where we can experience His presence, gain spiritual insights, and be transformed by His glory.

Overall, Matthew 17:8 provides a glimpse into the Transfiguration event, which affirms the preeminence of Jesus, emphasizes the importance of listening to Him, and reveals His divine glory. This passage encourages us to recognize Jesus as the focal point of our faith and to heed His teachings, seeking encounters with God and being transformed by His presence.
