Matthew 2:1

Posted on 18 May at 14:52

“Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on

Verse: “Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem”

Context:Matthew 2:1 is part of the Gospel of Matthew, which focuses on the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This verse is found in the second chapter, immediately following the account of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem.

Historical Background:The verse begins by mentioning that Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea during the reign of Herod the king. This sets the historical context for the events that follow.

The Wise Men:The verse introduces the “wise men from the east” who came to Jerusalem. These wise men, also known as the Magi, were astrologers or scholars who studied the stars and were considered learned men of their time.

Significance of the Wise Men:The arrival of the wise men is significant because it reveals that the birth of Jesus was not only known to the Jews but also caught the attention of Gentiles from distant lands. It emphasizes the universal significance of Jesus’ birth and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies that all nations would be blessed through the Messiah (e.g., Genesis 12:3).

The Star:In the following verses (Matthew 2:2-12), we learn that the wise men saw a star in the east that signified the birth of the King of the Jews. This star guided them to Jerusalem and eventually to the exact location where Jesus was.

Fulfillment of Prophecy:The arrival of the wise men and their homage to Jesus fulfilled the prophecy found in the Old Testament book of Micah: “But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel” (Micah 5:2).

Theological Lessons:a. Jesus’ Birth and Identity: Matthew 2:1 emphasizes that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, just as prophesied, and that He is the long-awaited King of the Jews and the Savior of all people.

b. Gentiles and Salvation: The inclusion of the wise men from the east highlights the fact that Jesus’ birth and salvation are not limited to the Jewish people but are available to people from all nations. It foreshadows the later mission to the Gentiles after Jesus’ resurrection.

c. God’s Sovereignty: The star that guided the wise men illustrates God’s providential plan to lead them to Jesus. It demonstrates God’s ability to work through natural phenomena to accomplish His divine purposes.

Application:

  • Matthew 2:1 reminds us of the significance of Jesus’ birth, the universal nature of His salvation, and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. It encourages us to seek Jesus, just as the wise men did, and to worship Him as the true King and Savior. It also reminds us of God’s sovereignty and His ability to guide us in our journey of faith, even through unexpected means.

As we reflect on this verse, may it inspire us to have a deeper appreciation for the birth of Jesus, to share the good news of salvation with others, and to trust in God’s guidance and providence in our lives.
