Matthew 20:26

Posted on 18 May at 14:50

“But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;”

Context:In this passage, Jesus is addressing His disciples after James and John’s mother asked for her sons to sit on Jesus’ right and left hand in His kingdom. Jesus uses this opportunity to teach them about true greatness and servant leadership.

Contrast with the World’s Concept of Greatness:Jesus begins by saying, “But it shall not be so among you.” He acknowledges that the world often measures greatness by power, authority, and position. However, in the kingdom of God, greatness is defined by a different standard.

True Greatness:Jesus teaches that true greatness is found in service. He says, “whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister.” The Greek word translated as “minister” is “diakonos,” which means a servant or one who serves others. Jesus is highlighting the importance of humility and selflessness.

Following Jesus’ Example:Jesus not only taught about servant leadership but also demonstrated it through His own life. In Mark 10:45, Jesus said, “For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Jesus, the Son of God, came to serve and sacrifice Himself for others, setting the ultimate example of humility and love.

Application:As followers of Jesus, we are called to emulate His example of servant leadership. True greatness is not about seeking positions of power or seeking to be served but rather about serving others with humility, love, and selflessness. This applies not only within the church but also in our families, workplaces, and communities.

  • Attitude of the Heart:To embrace servant leadership, we need to cultivate a servant’s heart. This means being willing to put others’ needs above our own, looking for opportunities to serve, and being willing to serve without seeking recognition or reward.
  • The Impact of Servant Leadership:When we adopt a servant’s heart and mindset, we have the potential to make a significant impact on the lives of others. By serving others, we reflect the love of Christ and contribute to the building of God’s kingdom on earth.

In conclusion, Matthew 20:26 teaches us that greatness in God’s kingdom is not about seeking power or recognition but rather about serving others with humility and love. Jesus Himself exemplified this servant leadership by His own life and ultimately through His sacrificial death. As followers of Christ, we are called to embrace this model of greatness and make a difference in the lives of others through selfless service.
