Matthew 20:4

Posted on 18 May at 14:50

“4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way.”

This verse is part of a parable that Jesus told to illustrate the kingdom of heaven. In the parable of the laborers in the vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16), Jesus uses the hiring of laborers by a landowner to convey important spiritual truths.

In this particular verse, the landowner goes out to hire laborers for his vineyard. He approaches a group of workers and tells them to go into the vineyard, assuring them that he will pay them what is right. Without any further details given, the workers trust the landowner’s promise and immediately go their way to work in the vineyard.

This verse emphasizes the trust and obedience demonstrated by the laborers. They didn’t question the landowner’s intentions or ask for specific terms. Instead, they willingly went to work, relying on his word that they would be compensated fairly.

From a spiritual perspective, this verse highlights several important principles:

Trust in God’s provision:The laborers trusted the landowner’s promise to pay them fairly. Similarly, as believers, we are called to trust in God’s provision and faithfulness. God knows our needs and promises to take care of us (Matthew 6:25-34). We can rely on His promises and have faith that He will provide for us in His perfect timing and according to His wisdom.

Obedience and readiness to serve:The workers in the parable immediately went to the vineyard when instructed by the landowner. This demonstrates their willingness to obey and serve. As Christians, we are called to be obedient to God’s commands and to serve others with humility and love (Mark 10:43-45). We should be ready to respond to God’s calling, trusting that He will guide and use us according to His purpose.

God’s justice and fairness:The landowner in the parable assures the workers that he will pay them what is right. This highlights God’s justice and fairness in dealing with His people. In our lives, we may encounter situations where it seems that others are being blessed more or receiving greater rewards for their labor. However, God’s ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9). He sees and rewards each person according to His perfect understanding and justice (Romans 2:6). We should not compare ourselves with others but rather trust in God’s sovereignty and His equitable distribution of blessings.

In summary, Matthew 20:4 teaches us about trust, obedience, and God’s justice. It reminds us to trust in God’s provision, be ready to serve, and not compare ourselves with others. As we strive to live out these principles in our lives, we can grow in our faith and experience the blessings of a close relationship with God.
