Matthew 21:2

Posted on 18 May at 14:50

“Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me.”

Context:Matthew 21:2 is part of the account of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, which took place during the final week of His earthly ministry. As Jesus approached Jerusalem, He sent two disciples ahead to a nearby village, instructing them to find a specific donkey and its colt. These animals were needed for Jesus to fulfill the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9, which proclaimed that the Messiah would enter Jerusalem riding on a donkey.

Symbolism:a. The donkey: By choosing to ride on a donkey, Jesus intentionally fulfilled the Messianic prophecy in Zechariah 9:9. This act symbolized humility, peace, and the fulfillment of God’s promises. It was in stark contrast to the expectation of a military conqueror riding a warhorse.

b. The colt: The mention of a colt indicates that the donkey had not been ridden before. It emphasizes the specific nature of Jesus’ request and highlights the fulfillment of prophecy.

Obedience and Faith:The disciples’ response to Jesus’ instructions reveals their obedience and faith. They were instructed to go into the village, find the animals, untie them, and bring them to Jesus. Without hesitation, they carried out the task as Jesus had commanded them. This demonstrates their trust in Jesus as their Lord and Master.

Practical Lessons:a. Fulfillment of Prophecy: Jesus’ meticulous fulfillment of the prophecy by riding on a donkey underscores the trustworthiness of God’s Word and His faithfulness in fulfilling His promises.

b. Humility and Service: Jesus, the Son of God, chose a humble mode of transportation, teaching us the importance of humility, simplicity, and service in our lives. He set an example for us to follow, emphasizing that true greatness is found in servanthood.

c. Obedience and Faith: The disciples’ immediate obedience and faith in carrying out Jesus’ instructions serve as a reminder for us to trust and obey Him, even in seemingly insignificant or unusual tasks. God’s plans and purposes are often beyond our understanding, but our obedience and faithfulness are essential.
