Matthew 21:35

Posted on 18 May at 14:50

“And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.”

This verse is part of the parable of the wicked tenants or vineyard workers. Jesus shared this parable with the chief priests and elders in the temple, highlighting the rejection of the prophets by the religious leaders and foreshadowing His own rejection and crucifixion.

Let’s explore the context and key lessons from this verse:

Context:Prior to this verse, Jesus tells the parable of the vineyard owner who leased his vineyard to some tenants. When the owner sends his servants to collect the fruit, the tenants mistreat and kill them. The parable serves as an allegory, with the vineyard owner representing God, the tenants symbolising the religious leaders, and the servants representing the prophets sent by God.

Rejection of Prophets:The actions of the tenants in the parable parallel the historical rejection of God’s messengers, the prophets, by the religious leaders of Israel. Throughout the Old Testament, we see instances of prophets being mistreated, ignored, or even killed because their messages were challenging or confronting to the people’s sinful behaviour. This verse emphasises the severity of the tenants’ response-beating, killing, and stoning the servants sent by the vineyard owner.

Foreshadowing of Jesus’ Crucifixion:The parable also has a prophetic element, pointing to Jesus’ own rejection and crucifixion. Just as the servants in the parable were mistreated and killed by the tenants, Jesus, the ultimate messenger of God, would be rejected, betrayed, and eventually crucified by the religious leaders of His time. This verse alludes to the violent opposition that Jesus would face as He fulfilled His mission on earth.

God’s Patience and Judgment:The parable highlights the long-suffering nature of the vineyard owner (representing God) who sends multiple servants to the tenants, patiently giving them opportunities to fulfil their responsibilities. However, their continued disobedience and mistreatment of the servants lead to the vineyard owner’s eventual judgment upon them. This serves as a warning that God’s patience with rebellious behaviour is not endless, and there will be a time of reckoning for those who reject His messengers and refuse to acknowledge His authority.

Overall, Matthew 21:35 underscores the historical rejection of God’s prophets by the religious leaders and foreshadows Jesus’ own rejection and crucifixion. It serves as a reminder of the consequences of rejecting God’s messengers and highlights God’s patience and eventual judgment upon those who persist in disobedience. This parable also points to the importance of recognising and accepting Jesus as the ultimate messenger of God and responding to His message with faith and obedience.
