Matthew 21:4

Listen to this article

“All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.”

Historical Context: In this passage, Jesus is nearing Jerusalem, and He instructs His disciples to bring Him a donkey and its colt. This event fulfills a prophecy from the Old Testament, specifically Zechariah 9:9. The prophecy speaks of a king who would come to Jerusalem in a humble manner, riding on a donkey.

  • Fulfillment of Prophecy:

Matthew highlights that this act was done to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet. It demonstrates that Jesus, as the Messiah, was fulfilling the messianic prophecies found in the Hebrew Scriptures. Jesus intentionally orchestrates His entry into Jerusalem to align with the prophecy, revealing Himself as the promised King and the fulfillment of Scripture.

Symbolism and Significance: The choice of riding on a donkey holds symbolic significance. It reflects humility, peace, and gentleness rather than a triumphant, militaristic approach. By entering Jerusalem on a donkey, Jesus emphasizes His role as a servant-king, contrasting with the expectations of an earthly ruler or military conqueror. Jesus’ mission was not political dominance but spiritual salvation.

Daughter of Zion: The phrase “daughter of Zion” refers to the people of Jerusalem or the Jewish nation as a whole. Jesus’ arrival as the King of the Jews fulfills the anticipation and hope of the Jewish people for the promised Messiah.

Meekness and Humility: The verse describes Jesus as meek and humble. Meekness does not imply weakness but rather strength under control. Jesus’ humble entrance into Jerusalem reveals His character and mission. He came to offer salvation, not through earthly power or force, but through sacrificial love and redemption.

Application:

  • This passage encourages believers to reflect on the character of Jesus as a humble and gentle King. It reminds us of the values of meekness, humility, and servanthood. As followers of Christ, we are called to imitate His example, embracing humility and considering others before ourselves.

Furthermore, this passage emphasizes the importance of recognizing Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. It strengthens our faith and confidence in His identity as the Messiah and Savior.

In conclusion, Matthew 21:4 portrays Jesus’ intentional fulfillment of prophecy, highlighting His meekness and humble nature as He enters Jerusalem. This passage invites us to contemplate Jesus’ character, follow His example of humility, and acknowledge Him as the promised King who came to bring salvation to all who believe.
