Matthew 21:41

They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.

Matthew 21:41 (KJV)

This verse records the answer given to Jesus by the chief priests and elders in the Parable of the Wicked Tenants. Jesus had asked what the owner of the vineyard would do to the tenants who beat his servants and killed his son. Their reply, spoken unknowingly against themselves, declares the owner’s certain and severe judgment.

“They say unto him” shows that the religious leaders themselves pronounce the verdict. “He will miserably destroy those wicked men” affirms the certainty of divine judgment against those who reject God’s messengers. “And will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen” indicates a transfer of stewardship to new caretakers. “Which shall render him the fruits in their seasons” promises that the new tenants will faithfully produce fruit at the proper times, unlike the previous ones.

The vineyard represents the kingdom of God, the owner is God, the wicked tenants symbolize the religious leaders who rejected the prophets and Jesus, and the new husbandmen point to faithful followers who will carry on God’s work. This transfer of responsibility from unfaithful leaders to a fruitful people is a direct consequence of their rejection of the Son.

The passage warns all believers that privilege brings accountability. Those who reject God’s messengers and fail in their duties will lose their position, while those who faithfully bear spiritual fruit will inherit the work of advancing God’s kingdom. It calls every believer to examine their own stewardship and to produce fruit in season for God’s glory.

This verse reminds us that God is just and patient, but He will hold His people accountable. The religious leaders’ self-condemnation shows how easily human pride can blind us to our own unfaithfulness. It invites us to respond with humility, embracing our role as caretakers of God’s vineyard and bearing fruit that honors Him.
