Matthew 23:34

“Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:”

Context:Let’s do a Bible study on Matthew 23:34, which is found in the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible.

This verse is part of Jesus’ teachings and can be found in the context of His confrontation with the religious leaders of His time, the Pharisees and scribes.

Here is the verse in question:

In this verse, Jesus is speaking to the Pharisees and scribes, revealing God’s plan to send messengers to His people.

Let’s break down this verse and explore its meaning in more detail.

1. "Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes": Jesus starts by declaring that God is sending messengers to the people.

2. "And some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city": Jesus predicts the fate of these messengers.

He foretells that some of these messengers will face severe persecution, even to the point of death.

The religious leaders, who should have recognised and accepted these messengers, would instead reject them and harm them physically and verbally.

This verse serves as a prophetic warning from Jesus about the fate of the messengers sent by God.

He exposes the religious leaders’ hypocrisy and reveals their upcoming role in rejecting and persecuting these messengers.

Additionally, this verse reflects a broader theme found throughout the Bible: the rejection and mistreatment of God’s messengers.

Throughout history, many prophets and messengers sent by God faced persecution and opposition.

Jesus Himself, as the ultimate Messenger of God, was crucified.

It is essential to consider the broader context of Matthew 23 when studying this verse.

In the preceding verses, Jesus addresses the religious leaders, rebuking them for their hypocrisy, pride, and failure to uphold God’s commandments.

This verse is part of Jesus’ condemnation of their behaviour and a warning of the consequences they will face for rejecting God’s messengers.
