Matthew 24:5

Listen to this article

“For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.”

Context:Matthew 24 is known as the Olivet Discourse, where Jesus speaks to His disciples about the signs of the end times and His second coming. In this chapter, Jesus warns His followers about false messiahs, false prophets, and the deception that will occur in the last days.

Many shall come in my name:Jesus predicts that there will be individuals who will arise and claim to be the Christ or claim to have divine authority. They will use His name and position to deceive people. These false messiahs may come with charismatic personalities, perform miracles, and appear convincing in their claims.

Deception:The verse highlights that the intention of these false messiahs is to deceive many. Their false teachings and claims will be enticing, leading people astray from the true Gospel and the real person of Jesus Christ. They may present distorted versions of the truth or even promote themselves as the sole source of salvation.

Warning and Vigilance:Jesus forewarns His followers to be on guard against such deception. He urges them to exercise discernment, to know the truth, and to be rooted in a genuine relationship with Him. Believers are called to test every spirit and teaching against the standard of God’s Word (1 John 4:1).

Application:This verse has both historical and future implications. Throughout history, there have been individuals who claimed to be the Messiah, deceiving many. Additionally, it serves as a reminder for believers today to be watchful, discerning, and anchored in the truth of Jesus Christ. The verse emphasizes the importance of studying the Scriptures to recognize false teachings and to have a personal relationship with Jesus to discern His voice.

  • Trust in the True Christ:The verse underscores the need for believers to have a deep knowledge of Jesus Christ, His teachings, and the genuine Gospel. By being firmly rooted in the truth, we can identify and reject false teachings and false messiahs. Our faith and trust should be solely in the true Christ, who is revealed in the Bible.

In conclusion, Matthew 24:5 warns about the rise of false messiahs who will deceive many people. It urges believers to be vigilant, rooted in the truth of Jesus Christ, and to exercise discernment in order to avoid falling into deception.
