Matthew 26:21

Posted on 18 May at 14:49

“And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.”

Context:This verse is part of the narrative of the Last Supper, where Jesus gathers with His disciples to share the Passover meal before His crucifixion. In this particular verse, Jesus makes a solemn announcement to His disciples that one among them will betray Him.

This statement by Jesus carries significant weight and reveals several essential truths:

Jesus’ Foreknowledge:Jesus, being the Son of God, possessed foreknowledge and insight into future events. He knew that a betrayal was imminent and that one of His trusted disciples would be the one to betray Him. This demonstrates His divine nature and ability to perceive things beyond human understanding.

The Reality of Betrayal:Jesus’ statement underscores the unfortunate reality of betrayal even within close relationships. It reveals that even those who have spent considerable time with Jesus and witnessed His teachings and miracles are not immune to the temptations of betrayal. This serves as a reminder that human beings, with their fallible nature, are susceptible to sin and can turn against even the most righteous individuals.

Fulfillment of Prophecy:The betrayal of Jesus was not unexpected but rather a fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. For instance, Psalm 41:9 says, “Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.” Jesus’ statement in Matthew 26:21 is an acknowledgment of the fulfillment of these prophecies, emphasizing that the events unfolding were part of God’s plan.

Jesus’ Sacrificial Mission:Despite knowing about the betrayal, Jesus willingly proceeds with His sacrificial mission. His impending betrayal and subsequent crucifixion were integral to God’s plan for the salvation of humanity. This verse highlights Jesus’ selflessness and His unwavering commitment to fulfilling God’s purpose, even in the face of betrayal.

The significance of Matthew 26:21 extends beyond its immediate context, shedding light on the themes of human nature, prophecy, and the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus for the redemption of mankind. It serves as a reminder of the trust we should place in God, even when faced with betrayal or difficult circumstances, and it emphasizes Jesus’ willingness to endure the ultimate act of love for our sake.
