And he answered and said, Hee that dippeth his hand with mee in the dish, the same shall betray me. Matthew 26:23 (KJV)

He that dippeth

his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me. Matthew 26:23 (KJV)

Matthew 26:23 records Jesus’ solemn declaration at the Last Supper that one of those sharing the intimate fellowship of the meal would betray Him. The setting is the final gathering before His crucifixion, where the act of dipping a hand into the dish symbolized close association, loyalty, and trust among the disciples.

Context

The verse is part of the narrative in which Jesus announces that a disciple will betray Him. This announcement prompts the disciples to ask, “Lord, is it I?” (Matt 26:22), revealing their concern and self‑examination.

Importance of Fellowship and Trust

Sharing the dish was a cultural sign of deep fellowship. Jesus’ warning that even the one who partakes so closely would betray Him underscores the sobering reality that outward intimacy does not guarantee genuine loyalty. It reminds believers to value authentic trust and to guard against superficial relationships.

Human Frailty and the Reality of Betrayal

The passage highlights human weakness. Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, later betrays Jesus for thirty pieces of silver (Matt 26:14‑16). This serves as a warning that no one is immune to temptation and that betrayal can arise from those nearest to us. The text calls for vigilance over our own hearts and discernment in our relationships.

Fulfillment of Prophecy

Jesus’ betrayal was foretold in Scripture (Psalm 41:9) and previously hinted by Him (John 13:21). The fulfillment of prophecy demonstrates divine sovereignty, showing that God can work through even the darkest human actions to accomplish His redemptive plan.

Examination of the Heart

The disciples’ question, “Lord, is it I?” reflects humility and self‑awareness. Their response invites each believer to examine personal motives before God, to remain open to correction, and to avoid a judgmental stance toward others while focusing on one’s own spiritual growth.

Overall Insight

Matthew 26:23 offers profound insight into human nature, the possibility of betrayal among close companions, and the necessity of genuine fellowship. It reassures that God’s faithfulness endures even when human faithfulness fails, pointing ultimately to the cross where Christ willingly gave Himself for humanity’s redemption.
