Matthew 26:27

Posted on 18 May at 14:49

“And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;”

Matthew 26:27 (KJV) says: “And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it.”

This verse is part of the account of the Last Supper, where Jesus gathered with His disciples to share a meal before His crucifixion. It is a significant moment that carries deep spiritual and symbolic meaning.

Symbolism of the Cup:In this verse, Jesus takes a cup and gives thanks. The cup symbolizes the blood that Jesus was about to shed for the forgiveness of sins. This imagery is linked to the Jewish tradition of the Passover meal, where a cup of wine represents the blood of the Passover lamb, which protected the Israelites from God’s judgment in Egypt.

Giving Thanks:Jesus, in this verse, offers a prayer of thanksgiving before giving the cup to His disciples. This act highlights His gratitude to God for the redemptive plan that was about to be fulfilled through His sacrifice. It also sets an example for believers to express gratitude and thanksgiving to God for His provisions and blessings.

“Drink ye all of it”:Jesus instructs His disciples to drink from the cup, emphasizing that they should all partake in it. This command implies that they are to participate fully in the sacrifice that Jesus is about to make. By drinking from the cup, the disciples were symbolically accepting and receiving the benefits of Jesus’ sacrifice, namely the forgiveness of sins and the establishment of a new covenant between God and humanity.

Application for Believers:This verse reminds believers of the importance of partaking in the Lord’s Supper, also known as the Eucharist or Communion. Just as the disciples were invited to drink from the cup, Christians are called to participate in this sacrament as a way of remembering and proclaiming the Lord’s death until He comes again (1 Corinthians 11:26). Through the symbolic act of eating the bread and drinking the cup, believers reaffirm their faith in Jesus’ atoning sacrifice and the new covenant established through His blood.

In summary, Matthew 26:27 presents a pivotal moment during the Last Supper, where Jesus took the cup, gave thanks, and instructed His disciples to drink from it. This act carries deep symbolic meaning, representing the shedding of Jesus’ blood for the forgiveness of sins. It also encourages believers to participate in the Lord’s Supper as a means of remembering and proclaiming Jesus’ sacrifice and the new covenant established through Him.
