Matthew 26:40

Posted on 18 May at 14:49

“And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?”

Context:Matthew 26:40 is part of the narrative of Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane just before His arrest and crucifixion. Jesus took Peter, James, and John with Him and asked them to stay awake and keep watch while He prayed. However, when Jesus returned after His prayer, He found them asleep.

Importance of Watchfulness:The verse highlights the importance of watchfulness and being alert in the life of a believer. Jesus expected His disciples to be watchful, not only for their own spiritual growth and well-being but also in times of trials and testing. He wanted them to be spiritually awake and vigilant.

Peter’s Struggle:Peter, one of Jesus’ closest disciples, is singled out in this verse. It’s interesting to note that Peter, who later became a prominent leader in the early Church, was found sleeping when Jesus needed him the most. This reveals Peter’s human weakness and reminds us that even the most dedicated followers of Christ can stumble.

Prayer and Support:Jesus’ request to His disciples was not only about keeping watch but also about companionship and support during His time of distress. He desired their presence and encouragement. Likewise, as believers, we are called to support and pray for one another, especially during challenging times.

Failing to Watch:Jesus’ question to Peter, “What, could ye not watch with me one hour?” implies disappointment. Jesus was not looking for physical assistance; He sought spiritual support. This verse serves as a gentle rebuke to the disciples for their inability to fulfill His request.

Application:The verse has several practical applications for believers today. It reminds us to be spiritually vigilant and watchful, to stay awake and alert to the work of God in our lives and the world around us. It also encourages us to be faithful in prayer and to support one another during times of trials and difficulties.

  • Lessons for the Church:This verse also carries implications for the Church as a whole. It challenges us to examine our commitment to God’s work and to be attentive to the needs of others. It reminds leaders to stay alert and fulfill their responsibilities faithfully.
