Matthew 26:45

Posted on 18 May at 14:49

“Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.”

This verse is part of the account of Jesus’ arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane, just before His crucifixion. To fully understand the significance of Matthew 26:45, it’s essential to consider the context and the events leading up to this moment.

In the previous verses, we see Jesus in deep anguish and sorrow, praying to His Father, knowing that the time of His betrayal and subsequent suffering is imminent. Jesus had taken Peter, James, and John with Him to pray, but upon returning to them, He found them asleep. Jesus addressed them in verse 45, urging them to sleep and rest while adding a crucial statement: “behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.”

Jesus’ Submission to God’s Will:Despite the overwhelming distress He felt, Jesus willingly accepted God’s plan for His sacrifice. He knew that His time of betrayal and suffering was drawing near, and He willingly surrendered Himself into the hands of sinners. This highlights Jesus’ obedience and His commitment to fulfilling God’s purpose for salvation.

Human Weakness and Spiritual Alertness:While Jesus was deeply engaged in prayer, His disciples, overcome by sorrow and unaware of the gravity of the situation, fell asleep. Jesus, in His compassion, recognized their physical and emotional exhaustion and advised them to rest. However, His words also carried a gentle rebuke, implying that they should have been spiritually alert and watchful during this crucial time. This serves as a reminder to believers to be spiritually awake and vigilant in their faith, especially in times of trial.

The Hour of Betrayal:Jesus spoke of the hour being at hand, referring to the moment when He would be betrayed by Judas Iscariot and handed over to the religious leaders and Roman authorities. This hour marked the beginning of the events that would ultimately lead to Jesus’ crucifixion. It signifies the fulfillment of the prophecies and the unfolding of God’s redemptive plan for humanity.

In summary, Matthew 26:45 captures a significant moment in Jesus’ final hours before His crucifixion. It emphasizes Jesus’ submission to God’s will, the contrast between human weakness and spiritual alertness, and the impending hour of His betrayal. This verse serves as a reminder to remain spiritually watchful, obedient to God’s plan, and aware of the significant events in the work of salvation.
