Matthew 26:56

Posted on 18 May at 11:22

But all this was done, that the Scriptures of the Prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the Disciples forsooke him, and fled: Matthew 26:56 (KJV)

Context: Matthew 26:54 is part of the account of Jesus’ arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane. Prior to this verse, Jesus had been praying and preparing himself for the imminent crucifixion. Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, arrives with a crowd armed with swords and clubs, betraying Jesus with a kiss.

Fulfillment of Scripture: The verse states that everything that had transpired was to fulfill the scriptures of the prophets. Throughout the Old Testament, numerous prophecies were given regarding the suffering and death of the Messiah, including Psalm 22, Isaiah 53, and Zechariah 12:10. Jesus’ arrest and subsequent events align with these prophecies, demonstrating that God’s plan was unfolding as foretold.

Disciples Forsaking Jesus: Following Jesus’ arrest, all the disciples deserted Him and fled. This occurrence fulfilled another prophecy found in Zechariah 13:7, which states, “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.” Despite their prior declarations of loyalty to Jesus (Matthew 26:35), fear and uncertainty caused them to abandon Him in that moment.

Faithfulness amid challenges: The disciples’ actions remind us of the importance of standing firm in our faith, especially when facing difficult circumstances. Even those who had spent years with Jesus and witnessed His miracles faltered under pressure. It serves as a reminder that our own faith may be tested, and we should strive to remain steadfast in our devotion to Christ.

Trusting in God’s sovereign plan: The fulfillment of prophecies through Jesus’ arrest demonstrates God’s sovereignty and His ability to work out His purposes. It reminds us that even in times of confusion and chaos, God is in control, and His plan will ultimately prevail.

Forgiveness and restoration: Despite the disciples’ momentary failure, Jesus later forgave and reinstated them. This highlights the abundant grace and mercy of Christ. It encourages us to seek forgiveness when we stumble and reminds us that no failure is beyond the reach of God’s redeeming love.
