Matthew 26:64
Iesus saith vnto him, Thou hast saide: Neuerthelesse I say vnto you, Hereafter shall yee see the Sonne of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heauen. Matthew 26:64 (KJV)
Jesus saith unto him,
Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Matthew 26:64 (KJV)
This verse is part of the account of Jesus’ trial before the high priest Caiaphas. After Jesus was arrested, He was brought before the Jewish authorities, and false witnesses were brought in to testify against Him. Caiaphas questioned Jesus about His identity and whether He claimed to be the Messiah, the Son of God.
In response to Caiaphas’ question, Jesus affirms His identity by saying, “Thou hast said.” This was a Jewish idiom indicating agreement or affirmation, and Jesus acknowledges that Caiaphas’ statement is correct.
Jesus goes on to refer to Himself as the “Son of man.” This title was used in the Old Testament book of Daniel (Daniel 7:13‑14) to describe a divine figure who would receive everlasting dominion and an eternal kingdom from God. By using this title, Jesus is proclaiming His divine authority and messianic identity.
He declares that He will be sitting on the right hand of power. That position is one of honor and authority, indicating Jesus’ exalted status as the Son of God and pointing to His future reign and rule over all creation. Sitting at the right hand of power signifies His divine authority and sovereignty.
Jesus further emphasizes His authority and second coming by saying that He will come in the clouds of heaven. This imagery is connected to Old Testament prophecies, especially Daniel 7:13‑14 and also Zechariah 12:10, and it points to the future event of His glorious return, when He will come with power and majesty to judge the living and the dead.
His words echo the prophecies of the Old Testament, affirming that He is the fulfillment of those prophecies. The reference to Daniel’s vision and the claim to be the Son of man emphasizes His divine identity and the ultimate authority bestowed upon Him by God.
The response to Jesus’ declaration of His divine authority was hostility and rejection. Caiaphas and the Jewish leaders accused Him of blasphemy and played a significant role in His crucifixion. Yet Jesus’ words were true, and the fulfillment of His prophecies would be witnessed by future generations.
Key takeaway: Matthew 26:64 reveals Jesus’ affirmation of His divine identity as the Son of man, His future exalted position at the right hand of power, and His second coming in glory. It highlights His authority, the fulfillment of prophecy, and the consequences faced by those who reject Him, reminding us of the majesty and sovereignty of Christ and urging us to recognize His divine nature and be prepared for His eventual return.
