Matthew 28:10

Listen to this article

“Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.”

Context:Matthew 28 is the concluding chapter of the Gospel of Matthew and describes the events following Jesus’ resurrection. In this particular verse, Jesus appears to His disciples after His resurrection and gives them instructions.

Jesus’ Appearance:After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples multiple times to strengthen their faith and commission them for their future mission. In this instance, Jesus encourages them not to be afraid and instructs them to go and deliver a message to His “brethren” (His disciples) about meeting Him in Galilee.

Assurance:By telling His disciples not to be afraid, Jesus acknowledges their fear and provides comfort. The resurrection of Jesus was a profound and awe-inspiring event, and the disciples might have been overwhelmed or afraid. Jesus’ words assure them that they need not fear, as He is with them.

Identity as “Brethren”:Jesus refers to His disciples as His “brethren.” This term emphasizes the close relationship between Jesus and His followers. It reflects the spiritual bond and kinship that exists between Christ and those who believe in Him. By using this term, Jesus reaffirms the intimacy and love He shares with His disciples.

Journey to Galilee:Jesus instructs His disciples to go to Galilee, a region in northern Israel. Galilee holds significance in Jesus’ ministry as it was the place where He began His public ministry and called His disciples. By summoning them to Galilee, Jesus intends to gather His followers together for a significant encounter.

Meeting Jesus:Jesus promises that His disciples will see Him in Galilee. This statement indicates that Jesus would have a personal encounter with them and provide further instructions and guidance for their future mission. This meeting would strengthen their faith, deepen their understanding of His teachings, and commission them to spread the Gospel.

Lessons we can learn from Matthew 28:10:

  • a. Assurance in the face of fear: Just as Jesus reassured His disciples, we can find comfort in knowing that Jesus is with us in our times of fear and uncertainty. His presence brings peace and dispels our anxieties.
  • b. Brotherhood with Christ: As believers, we share a special relationship with Jesus. We are part of His family, and He cares for us deeply. This understanding can foster a sense of belonging, support, and love within the community of believers.
  • c. Responding to Jesus’ call: Just as the disciples were called to Galilee, we are called to respond to Jesus’ call in our lives. He has a unique purpose and mission for each one of us, and it is essential to heed His instructions and follow His leading.
  • d. Expecting encounters with Christ: Jesus desires to have personal encounters with His followers. By spending time in prayer, studying His Word, and seeking Him earnestly, we can expect to experience the presence of Jesus in our lives and receive guidance and direction from Him.

Remember, Bible study involves delving deeper into the Word of God, contemplating its meaning, and allowing its principles to shape our lives. May this study of Matthew 28:10 encourage you to draw closer to Jesus, find comfort in His presence, and respond to His call in your life.
