Matthew 4:13
“And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim”
Context:In Matthew 4, we read about Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness, where He fasted for forty days and forty nights and faced various temptations from the devil. After successfully overcoming these temptations, Jesus began His public ministry by proclaiming the message of repentance, saying, “Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17, KJV). He called His first disciples, Simon Peter, Andrew, James, and John, who were fishermen by profession.
Significance:
In Matthew 4:13, we see Jesus leaving His hometown of Nazareth and moving to Capernaum. This relocation has significant implications for His ministry. Capernaum was situated on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, an area that had a diverse population due to its strategic location along trade routes. This move allowed Jesus to be at the centre of a bustling community, making it easier for Him to reach a broader audience and spread His message.
The mention of Capernaum being “upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim” is significant because it fulfils the prophecy spoken by Isaiah:
“The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles; The people which sat in darkness saw great light, and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up” (Matthew 4:15-16, KJV).
By dwelling in Capernaum, Jesus actively fulfils this prophecy, as the people living in this region would have the opportunity to witness the “great light” that is Jesus, bringing hope and salvation to those who were living in darkness.
Lessons:
Willingness to Relocate:Jesus’ willingness to leave Nazareth and move to Capernaum teaches us about His dedication to fulfilling God’s plan. Sometimes, following God’s calling may require us to leave our comfort zones and step into unfamiliar territories.
Reaching Out to All:Capernaum’s diverse population emphasises Jesus’ desire to reach people from different backgrounds. As followers of Christ, we are also called to share the message of salvation with people from all walks of life, without discrimination or prejudice.
Fulfillment of Prophecy:Matthew frequently highlights how Jesus’ life and actions fulfilled Old Testament prophecies. This verse reminds us of the accuracy and fulfilment of God’s Word throughout history. It strengthens our faith in God’s promises and assures us that He is in control.
Bringing Light to Darkness:Capernaum, described as a region sitting in darkness and shadow, symbolises the spiritual condition of humanity before Jesus came. Jesus is the “great light” that dispels darkness and brings hope, redemption, and salvation to all who believe in Him. This reminds us of the transformative power of Christ’s message in our lives and the importance of sharing it with others.
