Matthew 4:22
And they immediatly left the shippe and their father, and followed him. Matthew 4:22 (KJV)
In Matthew 4:18-22, Jesus walks by the Sea of Galilee and sees two brothers, Simon Peter (also known as Peter) and Andrew, who were fishermen. Jesus calls out to them, saying, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19, KJV). Immediately, they leave their nets and follow him. Later, Jesus sees James and John, sons of Zebedee, in a ship with their father, mending their nets. He calls them, and they immediately leave the ship and their father to follow him.
Responding to the Call: The responses of Peter and Andrew, and later James and John, to Jesus’ call are noteworthy. When Jesus called them, they didn’t hesitate or delay; instead, they immediately left their livelihoods and family responsibilities behind. Their responses teach us the importance of promptly responding to Jesus’ call in our lives.
Discipleship: The acts of leaving everything and following Jesus highlight the concept of discipleship. By leaving their fishing professions and families, these disciples made decisive choices to prioritize their relationship with Jesus and commit themselves to becoming His followers. As followers of Christ, we are called to place Him first in our lives, above all other commitments and pursuits.
Trust and Faith: Their willingness to leave their familiar lives behind demonstrates their trust and faith in Jesus. They recognized that Jesus was worth leaving their comfort zones for and trusted in His leadership. This challenges us to examine our own trust in Jesus and our willingness to step out in faith when He calls us to something new or unfamiliar.
Transformation and Purpose: Jesus promises to make Peter, Andrew, James, and John “fishers of men.” This statement signifies a transformation of their purpose and mission in life. Instead of catching fish, they would now be instrumental in bringing people to know and follow Jesus. This verse reminds us that when we respond to Jesus’ call, He transforms our lives and gives us a new purpose aligned with His kingdom.
Matthew 4:22 encourages us to reflect on our response to Jesus’ call in our lives. Are we willing to let go of our attachments and embrace His call, even if it means leaving behind our comfort zones? Are we actively engaged in following Jesus and being His disciples? This verse also challenges us to trust in Jesus and His leading. It reminds us that when we step out in faith and surrender to Him, He can transform our lives and give us a new purpose. As we seek to follow Jesus, we should be open to His direction and obedient to His teachings.
In summary, Matthew 4:18-22 serves as a reminder of the radical commitment and transformation that comes with being a disciple of Jesus. May we respond to His call with faith, trust, and a willingness to let go of anything that hinders our journey with Him.
