Matthew 6:2

Listen to this article

“Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.”

Context:To understand this verse better, it’s important to consider its context. Matthew 6 is part of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, where He teaches His disciples about various aspects of living a righteous life. In this particular section, Jesus addresses the issue of giving to the needy, emphasizing the right attitude and motivation behind acts of charity.

Almsgiving:The verse begins by mentioning “alms,” which refers to acts of charity or giving to the poor and needy. Jesus encourages His followers to engage in such acts, but with the right motives and intentions.

Hypocrites:Jesus warns against acting like the hypocrites who make a spectacle of their giving. These individuals would blow trumpets or sound instruments to attract attention and gain praise from others for their generosity. Their primary motivation was to be seen and acknowledged by people rather than genuinely helping those in need.

Seeking Human Glory:Jesus emphasizes that those who seek public recognition and acclaim for their acts of charity have already received their reward in the form of the praise they desire. Their intention was not to please God or help others but to gain personal glory. However, their actions lacked sincerity and true righteousness.

The Hidden Reward:Jesus’ words suggest that true acts of charity should be performed quietly and without seeking public recognition. The motivation behind giving should be love and compassion for others, rather than the desire for personal glory. When acts of kindness are done in secret, with pure intentions, God, who sees everything, will reward them openly in due time (Matthew 6:4).

Overall, Matthew 6:2 teaches us the importance of performing acts of charity with genuine motives and a desire to please God, rather than seeking the praise and admiration of people. Our focus should be on helping others and demonstrating love and compassion, knowing that God, who sees our hearts, will reward us accordingly.

It is worth noting that different Bible translations may convey slightly different nuances of the verse, so comparing different versions can provide additional insights.
