Matthew 6:9
“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.”
Context:Matthew 6:9 is a part of Jesus’ teaching on prayer in the Sermon on the Mount. In this section, Jesus instructs His disciples on how to pray with sincerity and humility, focusing on a heartfelt connection with God rather than seeking to impress others.
“After this manner therefore pray ye”: Jesus begins by providing a model or pattern for prayer. He emphasizes the importance of the heart and attitude in prayer rather than merely repeating words mechanically. The Lord’s Prayer, as it is commonly known, serves as a guide for believers in expressing their devotion to God.
“Our Father which art in heaven”: This opening phrase of the Lord’s Prayer acknowledges the relationship believers have with God as their Father. By addressing God as “Our Father,” Jesus emphasizes the intimate and familial nature of the believer’s connection to God. It highlights the idea that believers are part of God’s family through faith in Jesus Christ.
Additionally, the phrase “which art in heaven” reminds believers that God is not limited to a specific earthly location but is transcendent, dwelling in the heavenly realm.
“Hallowed be thy name”: The word “hallowed” means to be holy, revered, or set apart. In this part of the prayer, believers express a desire for God’s name to be honored, respected, and regarded as holy. It reflects a recognition of God’s unique and majestic nature.
By uttering these words, believers demonstrate their reverence for God and their acknowledgment of His worthiness to be praised. They express a desire for others to recognize and honor God’s name as well.
