Matthew 7:18

Listen to this article

“Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.”

Context:Matthew 7:18 is part of the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus teaches His disciples and the crowd gathered about various aspects of kingdom living. In this particular section, Jesus is addressing the importance of discerning true prophets from false ones.

Symbolism of Trees:Jesus uses the imagery of trees and their fruit to illustrate a spiritual principle. Trees are known by their fruit, meaning that the nature of a person or a teaching can be discerned by examining the results or outcomes it produces.

Good Tree and Good Fruit:Jesus states that every good tree brings forth good fruit. In a spiritual sense, a “good tree” refers to a person who is genuinely righteous and in right relationship with God. Such individuals bear “good fruit,” which represents the evidence of a transformed life characterized by righteous actions, virtues, and good works. Good fruit can include qualities like love, joy, peace, kindness, gentleness, and faithfulness.

Corrupt Tree and Evil Fruit:On the other hand, Jesus teaches that a corrupt or bad tree brings forth evil fruit. A “corrupt tree” refers to a person who is unrighteous, lacking integrity, or disconnected from God. Such individuals produce “evil fruit,” which represents actions, behaviors, or attitudes that are contrary to God’s will and character. Evil fruit can include things like dishonesty, hatred, strife, selfishness, and immorality.

Discerning True Prophets:In the broader context of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus warns about false prophets who may come in sheep’s clothing but are inwardly ravenous wolves (Matthew 7:15). By using the analogy of trees and their fruit, Jesus emphasizes the importance of discernment. He encourages His followers to evaluate the character, teachings, and actions of those who claim to be prophets or spiritual leaders. True prophets will exhibit a consistent pattern of good fruit in their lives, while false prophets will demonstrate a pattern of evil fruit.

Application:Matthew 7:18 carries practical implications for believers today. It reminds us of the significance of examining the lives and teachings of those who influence us spiritually. We are called to discern whether their actions and teachings align with the principles and values of God’s Word. Additionally, it prompts us to examine our own lives and evaluate the fruit we produce. As followers of Christ, we are called to bear good fruit, demonstrating the transformative power of God’s presence in our lives.

  • In summary:Matthew 7:18 highlights the importance of discernment and the connection between a person’s character and their actions. Just as a good tree produces good fruit and a corrupt tree produces evil fruit, our lives should bear witness to the transformation brought about by our relationship with God, resulting in good works and righteous living.
