“When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.”

Matthew 8:1 (KJV) states: When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.

This verse is found in the Gospel of Matthew, which is one of the four canonical Gospels in the New Testament. Matthew’s Gospel focuses on the life, ministry, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

In this particular verse, we find Jesus descending from a mountain. To fully grasp the significance of this event, it’s important to consider the context and the preceding chapters of Matthew.

Before Matthew 8:1, we see the conclusion of the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7. The Sermon on the Mount is a pivotal discourse where Jesus teaches His disciples and the multitudes about the principles of the Kingdom of God. It covers various topics such as the Beatitudes, love for enemies, prayer, fasting, and wise living. Jesus’ teachings in the Sermon on the Mount display the radical nature of His kingdom and call for righteousness and a transformed heart.

After the conclusion of the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 8:1 marks a transition in Jesus’ ministry. The verse mentions that “great multitudes followed him.” This indicates the continuing popularity and growing interest in Jesus’ teachings and miracles. The people were drawn to Him because of His authority, wisdom, and power.

As we continue reading Matthew 8, we encounter a series of miracles performed by Jesus, which demonstrates His authority over various aspects of life. In this chapter, Jesus heals a leper (Matthew 8:2-4), heals the centurion’s servant (Matthew 8:5-13), and calms a storm (Matthew 8:23-27), among other miraculous acts. These miracles reveal Jesus’ divine power and His ability to bring healing, restoration, and deliverance.

Furthermore, by coming down from the mountain and interacting with the multitudes, Jesus demonstrates His accessibility and willingness to engage with people from all walks of life. He reaches out to the marginalized, the sick, and those in need of His touch. This verse emphasizes Jesus’ compassion and His desire to bring salvation and deliverance to humanity.
