Matthew 8:31

Listen to this article

So the deuils besought him, saying, If thou cast vs out, suffer vs to goe away into the herd of swine. Matthew 8:31 (KJV)

Context: This verse is part of the account of Jesus healing two demon‑possessed men in the region of Gadara, also called Gerasenes or Gergesenes. The men lived among the tombs and were violently possessed. When Jesus arrived, the demons within them recognized Him and begged to be cast out into a nearby herd of swine.

The Reality of Spiritual Warfare: The passage underscores that demons are real beings with self‑awareness, intelligence, and will. Their recognition of Jesus’ authority reveals that spiritual forces are actively engaged against humanity. Believers are therefore called to acknowledge this unseen battle and to depend on the authority and power of Christ to overcome darkness (cf. Ephesians 6:12).

The Power and Authority of Jesus: The demons’ request to be sent into the swine demonstrates their awareness of Jesus’ supreme authority over the demonic realm. Even evil spirits submit to His command, confirming that Christ possesses the power to bind and expel them. This incident vividly displays the divine authority of the Son of God.

The Destructive Nature of Evil: When the demons entered the herd, the swine rushed down a steep bank into the sea and drowned. Their destruction illustrates the inherent chaos and ruin that evil brings. The fate of the pigs serves as a warning that aligning with evil leads inevitably to loss and devastation.

The Value of Human Life: While the demons sought a new host, Jesus’ primary concern remained the deliverance of the two men. His compassion for human life affirms that God values people above livestock. Jesus came “to seek and save the lost” (Luke 19:10) and offers hope, freedom, and salvation to all who turn to Him.

Application: This verse calls believers to recognize the reality of spiritual warfare, to rely on Christ’s authority, and to shun anything that aligns with evil. It also urges us to prioritize the sanctity of human life and to share the hope of salvation with those in need of deliverance.

In conclusion, Matthew 8:31 reveals the reality of spiritual conflict, highlights the supreme power of Jesus over demonic forces, demonstrates the destructive nature of evil, and affirms the precious value God places on human beings. It encourages believers to engage the spiritual battle with confidence in Christ and to actively proclaim the gospel to a lost world.
