Matthew 9:25

Listen to this article

But when the people were put foorth, he went in, and tooke her by the hand: and the mayd arose. Matthew 9:25 (KJV)

Matthew 9:18‑26 records the dramatic healing of a ruler’s daughter. A ruler approached Jesus, pleading for help because his daughter had just died, yet he believed that if Jesus would lay His hand on her she would live. Jesus agreed to accompany him to his house. On the way a woman who had suffered a twelve‑year hemorrhage touched the hem of His garment and was instantly healed. When they arrived, mourners and minstrels filled the home, making a great noise. Jesus told them, “Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth,” and the crowd laughed. He then expelled the people, entered the room, took the girl by the hand, and she arose.

This scene displays Jesus’ deep compassion and sovereign power over death. Despite the mocking crowd, He remained undeterred, demonstrating authority not only over physical illness but also over death itself. His command brought life and restoration, revealing His divine ability as the Son of God to heal both body and spirit.

Faith is a central thread throughout the narrative. The ruler approached Jesus with confidence that His touch could restore life, and the hemorrhaging woman acted in faith by reaching out to His garment. Even when messengers reported the girl’s death, Jesus reassured the ruler, “Take heed, and be not afraid” (Matt 9:22), urging continued trust. Their examples encourage believers today to persist in faith, bringing every difficulty before Christ, confident that He can intervene.

Jesus’ concern for individuals shines clearly. He cared for the ruler’s daughter and the suffering woman alike, meeting each at their point of need. This personal attention reminds us that He is not distant but intimately involved in each life, ready to offer healing and restoration.

The passage also teaches us to recognize and submit to Jesus’ lordship. By acknowledging His authority over death, sin, and sickness, we invite His transformative power into every aspect of our existence. Cultivating faith through prayer, Scripture study, and deeper relationship with Him equips us to experience God’s miracles.

Finally, the Bible remains a rich source of wisdom and guidance. As we study and reflect on this account, may our understanding of God’s love deepen, leading us to live lives that honor Him.
