Matthew 9:3

Listen to this article

“And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth.”

Context:Matthew 9:3 is part of a larger narrative where Jesus heals a paralyzed man. In this verse, certain scribes, who were experts in Jewish law and teachings, accuse Jesus of blasphemy in their hearts.

Blasphemy and Jesus’ Authority:The scribes accuse Jesus of blasphemy because, as they believed, only God had the authority to forgive sins. By claiming to forgive sins, Jesus was making a divine claim. This accusation reveals the scribes’ misunderstanding or rejection of Jesus’ true identity as the Son of God.

Jesus’ Awareness:Although the scribes did not verbalize their accusation, Jesus, being fully aware of their thoughts and intentions, responds to their unspoken accusation throughout the following verses.

Jesus’ Divine Authority:Jesus, understanding their doubts and the reason behind their accusation, proceeds to demonstrate His authority both to forgive sins and heal physical ailments. In doing so, He provides evidence that His authority is not blasphemy but a reflection of His divinity.

The Power to Forgive Sins:Through His teachings and actions, Jesus reveals that He possesses the power to forgive sins. This power demonstrates His role as the Messiah and the mediator between God and humanity, fulfilling the prophecies and the purpose of His earthly ministry.

Lessons for Believers:Matthew 9:3 serves as a reminder that Jesus’ claims and actions may be misunderstood or rejected by some. However, as believers, we should hold fast to the truth of His divine authority and recognize Him as the only one who can forgive sins and bring salvation.

The Relevance Today:Matthew 9:3 challenges us to examine our own beliefs about Jesus. Do we recognise His divine authority? Do we fully trust in His power to forgive sins and transform lives? It also encourages us to embrace Jesus’ forgiveness and extend it to others, just as He demonstrated throughout His ministry.

Remember to read the surrounding verses and chapters to gain a deeper understanding of the narrative and the broader message conveyed in Matthew’s Gospel.
