Nahum 2:1

Posted on 18 May at 14:14
Listen to this article

“He that dasheth in pieces is come up before thy face: keep the munition, watch the way, make thy loins strong, fortify thy power mightily.”

Historical Context:The book of Nahum is one of the Minor Prophets in the Old Testament. It is a prophecy against the city of Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian Empire. The Assyrians were known for their brutal and oppressive treatment of conquered nations, and Nineveh was a symbol of their power. Nahum’s prophecy declares the impending destruction of Nineveh and brings a message of comfort to the oppressed people of Judah.

Understanding Nahum 2:1:In this verse, Nahum describes the approaching enemy, who is referred to as “he that dasheth in pieces.” This likely refers to the Babylonian army, which would later conquer and destroy Nineveh. The verse provides instructions to the people of Nineveh on how to respond to this imminent threat.

  • “Keep the munition”: This phrase advises the people to guard their defences and protect their fortifications. It emphasises the importance of maintaining a strong defence in the face of danger.
  • “Watch the way”: The people are urged to be vigilant and attentive to the approaching enemy. They should be aware of their movements and prepare themselves accordingly.
  • “Make thy loins strong”: This phrase is a metaphorical expression calling for strength and courage. In biblical times, the “loins” referred to the area around the hips, symbolising strength and readiness for action.
  • “Fortify thy power mightily”: This instruction emphasises the need to strengthen their military and political power. They are encouraged to take decisive measures to reinforce their position and resist the impending destruction.

Spiritual Application:Though this verse specifically addresses the people of Nineveh in a historical context, there are spiritual lessons we can draw from it:

Be prepared:Just as the people of Nineveh were urged to keep their defences and watch for the enemy, we should be spiritually prepared for the challenges and temptations we may face in life. We need to guard our hearts, be alert, and equip ourselves with the armour of God (Ephesians 6:11-18).

Seek strength in God:The call to make the loins strong reminds us that our strength comes from the Lord. In times of difficulty, we should rely on His power and find strength in Him (Psalm 28:7, Philippians 4:13).

Build a firm foundation:The instruction to fortify their power mightily suggests the importance of having a strong foundation in our faith. We should cultivate a deep relationship with God, study His Word, and build our lives on the rock-solid truth of His teachings (Matthew 7:24-27).

Trust in God’s sovereignty:While Nineveh faced impending destruction, we are reminded of God’s ultimate control over history and His judgment. We can trust that God is just, and His purposes will ultimately prevail (Romans 8:28).

In conclusion, Nahum 2:1 provides practical guidance to the people of Nineveh as they faced the approaching enemy. It also offers spiritual lessons for us today, encouraging us to be prepared, seek strength in God, build a firm foundation in our faith, and trust in God’s sovereignty.
