Nehemiah 1:10

Listen to this article

“Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand.”

Context: The book of Nehemiah is set during the time when the people of Israel were in exile in Babylon. Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the king of Persia, receives news about the dire condition of Jerusalem and its walls. Upon hearing this, he is burdened in his heart and prays to God, seeking His favour and guidance. Nehemiah’s prayer in chapter 1 is a powerful example of his faith and dependence on God.

Key Themes:

  • Recognition of God’s Redemption:Nehemiah acknowledges that the people of Israel are servants and God’s chosen people. He attributes their redemption to God’s great power and strong hand. This recognition highlights the importance of acknowledging God’s sovereignty and work in our lives.
  • God’s Power and Deliverance:Nehemiah emphasizes God’s power and might in redeeming His people. The Israelites had been taken captive by foreign powers, but it was God who had the power to rescue and redeem them. This verse serves as a reminder that no matter how dire our circumstances may seem, God’s power is greater, and He is able to deliver us.
  • Identity and Relationship:Nehemiah identifies himself and the people of Israel as servants of God. This highlights the intimate relationship between God and His people. As believers, we are called to recognize our identity as God’s servants and seek to align ourselves with His purposes.
  • Prayer and Intercession:Nehemiah’s prayer in this chapter demonstrates his heart for his people and his willingness to intercede on their behalf. It shows the importance of prayer in seeking God’s favour, guidance, and intervention in challenging situations. Nehemiah’s prayer is an example for us to follow when we face difficulties or are burdened for others.

Application:Nehemiah’s words remind us that we, too, have been redeemed by God’s power through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. As Christians, we can find encouragement in recognizing God’s faithfulness and power in our own lives. We can trust in His ability to rescue us from any situation and seek His guidance and intervention through prayer.

  • Acknowledge God’s work:Take time to reflect on the ways in which God has redeemed you and worked in your life. Recognize His power and sovereignty.
  • Seek God’s intervention:When faced with challenges or burdens, follow Nehemiah’s example by seeking God’s guidance and intervention through prayer. Trust in His power to deliver and transform your circumstances.
  • Embrace your identity:Remember that as a believer, you are a servant of God. Seek to align your life with His purposes and walk in obedience to Him.
  • Intercede for others:Develop a heart of compassion and intercession for those around you. Pray for the needs of others and seek God’s favour on their behalf.
  • Share your testimony:Share with others how God has redeemed you and worked in your life. Your testimony can inspire and encourage others to trust in God’s power and faithfulness.

Remember, Nehemiah’s prayer and the subsequent events in the book demonstrate God’s faithfulness and provision in rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. Through faith, prayer, and action, Nehemiah played a crucial role in the restoration of Jerusalem. May we likewise trust in God’s power, seek His guidance, and actively participate in His work in our lives and the world around us.
