Ater, Hizkiiah, Azzur, Nehemiah 10:17 (KJV)

“And the Levites: both Jeshua the son of Azaniah, Binnui of the sons of Henadad, Kadmiel;”

Historical Background: Nehemiah was a cupbearer to King Artaxerxes of Persia.

Upon hearing about the devastated state of Jerusalem, he was burdened and received permission from the king to return to Jerusalem to rebuild its walls.

Nehemiah led a group of exiles back to Jerusalem and accomplished the rebuilding of the walls in just 52 days.

Understanding the Verse: In Nehemiah 10:17, the focus is on the Levites who played an essential role in the religious life and worship of the Israelites.

This verse mentions three Levites by name: Jeshua the son of Azaniah, Binnui of the sons of Henadad, and Kadmiel.

Significance of the Levites: The Levites were descendants of Levi, one of the twelve sons of Jacob.

They were chosen by God to serve as priests and caretakers of the tabernacle/temple.

The Levites were not given any land inheritance but were scattered throughout the tribes of Israel to fulfill their duties.

Jeshua the son of Azaniah: Jeshua is a common name in the Bible, and this particular Jeshua is not to be confused with other individuals with the same name.

He is identified as the son of Azaniah.

While not much is known about him specifically, it is likely that he played a significant role as a Levite in the religious affairs of the community.

Binnui of the sons of Henadad: Binnui is mentioned as one of the sons of Henadad.

Henadad was a Levite whose descendants participated in the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem under Nehemiah’s leadership.

Binnui, being a Levite, would have contributed to the spiritual life of the community.

Kadmiel: Kadmiel is another Levite mentioned in this verse.

Similar to Jeshua and Binnui, Kadmiel likely had responsibilities related to the religious observances and practices of the Israelites.

However, specific details about Kadmiel are limited in the Bible.

Value of Service: The inclusion of the Levites in this verse reminds us of the importance of serving God and His people.

The Levites were dedicated to their role in worship and the spiritual life of Israel, serving as an example of devotion and commitment.

Importance of Names: The mention individual Levites highlights the significance of each person’s contribution, even if their stories are not fully elaborated upon.

It reminds us that God values and knows each person by name, regardless of how prominent or well‑known they may be.

Unity and Cooperation: The fact that different Levites are mentioned together in this verse also emphasizes the importance of unity and collaboration within the community.

Each Levite had a unique role, but they worked together for a common purpose.

Historical Context: Nehemiah 10:17, being part of the book of Nehemiah, serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness in restoring Jerusalem and His people after the exile.

It reinforces the idea that God is actively involved in the affairs of His people, even during challenging times.

In conclusion, Nehemiah 10:17 highlights the role of the Levites in the religious life of Israel.

While specific details about the individuals mentioned are limited, their inclusion serves to remind us of the value of service, the significance of each person’s contribution, the importance of unity, and God’s faithfulness throughout history.
