Nehemiah 10:28
And the rest of the people, the Priests, the Leuites, the Porters, the singers, the Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselues from the people of the lands, vnto the Law of God, their wiues, their sonnes, and their daughters, euery one hauing knowledge, and hauing vnderstanding. Nehemiah 10:28 (KJV)
Nehemiah 10:28 is part of a larger passage that describes the commitment made by the people of Israel after the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem under the leadership of Nehemiah. The book of Nehemiah takes place during the time when the Jewish people were returning from the Babylonian exile and rebuilding Jerusalem. Nehemiah was appointed as the governor of Jerusalem by King Artaxerxes of Persia, and one of his primary concerns was the spiritual renewal of the people and their adherence to God’s law.
In Nehemiah 10 we see a solemn covenant being made by the people, where they commit themselves to follow God’s law wholeheartedly. This covenant was made by various groups of people, including the priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, and those who had separated themselves from the surrounding nations to follow the law of God.
The verse specifically mentions “the rest of the people,” which implies a broad representation of the Israelite community. It emphasizes that it was not only the leaders or specific groups who made the commitment, but also their families—wives, sons, and daughters—showing the inclusivity of the covenant and the collective responsibility of the entire community to uphold God’s law.
While the verse lists the groups and their families, it also highlights two important qualities possessed by the people: knowledge and understanding. The wording “every one having knowledge, and having understanding” indicates that the people were aware of God’s law, had studied it, and comprehended its requirements, enabling them to make an informed and sincere commitment.
By making this covenant, the people of Israel expressed their desire to live in obedience to God’s commandments and to be separate from the practices and influences of the surrounding nations. They deliberately chose to align their lives with God’s standards and to maintain the distinctiveness of their faith.
This verse reminds us of the importance of studying and understanding God’s Word. It is not enough to simply go through the motions of religious rituals; true commitment to God requires knowledge and understanding of His law. When we have knowledge and understanding of God’s Word, we are better equipped to live in accordance with His will and to make choices that honor Him.
Nehemiah 10:28 serves as a testament to the people’s devotion and their desire to maintain their covenant relationship with God. It encourages us to examine our own commitment to God’s Word and challenges us to prioritize studying and understanding His teachings in order to live a life that pleases Him.
