Hattush, Shebaniah, Malluch, Nehemiah 10:4 (KJV)

Historical Background: The book of Nehemiah takes place after the Babylonian exile when the Israelites returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the city walls. Nehemiah was a cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes, and he was granted permission to go to Jerusalem and lead the rebuilding efforts. As Nehemiah began the restoration of the walls, he faced opposition and challenges, but with God’s help, the work was accomplished.

The Covenant Renewal: In Nehemiah 10, the people of Israel make a solemn covenant with God, vowing to follow His commandments and live according to His law. This covenant is an important step in the spiritual restoration of the Israelites as they sought to align their lives with God’s will.

Nehemiah 10:4 (KJV): Pashur, Amariah, Malchijah, Hattush, Shebaniah, Malluch, Harim, Meremoth, Obadiah, Daniel, Ginnethon, Baruch, Meshullam, Abijah, Mijamin, Maaziah, Bilgai, Shemaiah: these were the priests. Nehemiah 10:4 mentions three individuals: Harim, Meremoth, and Obadiah. These individuals were likely leaders or representatives of their respective families or clans. The listing of names in this verse identifies those who were actively participating in the covenant renewal.

“Nehemiah 10:4 (KJV): ‘And the priests: the sons of Jedaiah, of the house of God; and the Levites: the sons of Asaph, of the children of Levi.’” Symbolic Meaning: Although this verse appears to be a listing of names, it holds significance within the larger context of the covenant renewal. Each person mentioned made a personal commitment to uphold God’s commandments and be faithful to the covenant. By recording their names, the verse emphasizes the individual responsibility and accountability that comes with being part of God’s people.
