Nehemiah 10:8
Maaziah, Bilgai, Shemaiah: these were the priests. Nehemiah 10:8 (KJV)
Nehemiah stands as a pivotal Jewish leader who guided the restoration of Jerusalem and the rebuilding of its walls after the Israelites returned from Babylonian exile. In the tenth chapter of Nehemiah, the community gathers to renew its covenant with God, producing a written agreement that is signed and sealed as a public testament to their commitment to obey God’s law and live according to His commandments.
Verse 8 of Nehemiah 10 records the participants in this covenant ceremony. It specifically names the priests Maaziah, Bilgai, and Shemaiah, and, in the broader context of the chapter, lists the Levites, singers, porters, Nethinims, and the people of Israel who joined in the oath. This enumeration underscores the collective dedication of the whole community—both religious officials and laypeople—to uphold the covenant.
It is important to note that the quotation often cited—“And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him …”—does not appear in Nehemiah 10. That passage belongs to Nehemiah 9:8‑9, where the people recall God’s covenant with Abraham and the promise of the land of Canaan, mentioning the nations that inhabited it. The purpose of Nehemiah 10, however, is not to recount Abraham’s story but to emphasize the present generation’s resolve to remain faithful to God’s commandments.
The renewal of the covenant in Nehemiah 10 therefore serves as a communal affirmation of God’s righteousness and a call for the people to maintain their fidelity to the covenant throughout history. By documenting the names of the priests and other groups, the text highlights the unity of the nation in its dedication to God, reinforcing the central theme of collective responsibility and steadfastness in the post‑exilic community.
