Nehemiah 11:34

“And at Zanoah, and at Adullam, and in their villages, at Lachish, and the fields thereof, at Azekah, and in the villages thereof. And they dwelt from Beersheba unto the valley of Hinnom.”

Context:Nehemiah is a book in the Old Testament that focuses on the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem and the restoration of the people of Israel after their exile in Babylon. Nehemiah played a significant role in leading the people in this task.

Geographical Locations:The verse mentions several locations: Zanoah, Adullam, Lachish, Azekah, Beersheba, and the valley of Hinnom. These were cities and villages in the region of Judah. This verse highlights that the people of Israel dwelt in these locations after the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem.

Zanoah and Adullam:Zanoah was a town in the lowland area of Judah, mentioned in the territory allotted to the tribe of Judah (Joshua 15:34). Adullam was another city in the same region (Joshua 15:35). These cities were inhabited by the Israelites after the restoration of Jerusalem.

Lachish and Azekah:Lachish and Azekah were cities in Judah that were also mentioned in the book of Joshua (Joshua 10:3-5). Lachish was an important fortified city and was known for its resistance against the Babylonians. However, it was eventually conquered and destroyed. Azekah was located nearby and served as a stronghold as well. The mention of these cities emphasizes the reestablishment of habitation in these places.

Beersheba:Beersheba was a well-known city in the southernmost part of Judah. It held historical and religious significance for the Israelites as it was associated with the patriarchs Abraham and Isaac. The mention of Beersheba indicates that the Israelites spread across a large territory, extending from Beersheba in the south.

Valley of Hinnom:The valley of Hinnom, also known as Gehenna, was a deep ravine outside Jerusalem. It was associated with idolatrous practices and later became a symbol of judgment and punishment. The mention of this valley indicates that the dwellings of the Israelites extended up to this point.

Nehemiah 11:34 portrays the reestablishment of habitation in various locations within the region of Judah, including Zanoah, Adullam, Lachish, Azekah, and the area from Beersheba to the valley of Hinnom. This verse highlights the restoration and resettlement of the people of Israel following the reconstruction of the walls of Jerusalem.
