Nehemiah 12:43

Posted on 18 May at 15:21
Listen to this article

“Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.”

Context:Nehemiah was a Jewish cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes I. He had a burden to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, which had been destroyed. With the permission of the king, Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem and led the people in rebuilding the walls while facing opposition. After the completion of the walls, Nehemiah and the people gathered together for a dedication ceremony.

Great sacrifices:On the day of the dedication, the people of Jerusalem offered great sacrifices to God. Sacrifices were an essential part of the Israelite worship system prescribed by the Law of Moses. These sacrifices were a way for the people to express their devotion, gratitude, and commitment to God.

Rejoicing with great joy:The people not only offered sacrifices, but they also rejoiced with great joy. Their joy was not merely a momentary happiness but a deep sense of gladness and celebration. It was a response to God’s faithfulness in helping them complete the task of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem.

God made them rejoice:The source of their joy was attributed to God. It was God who had made them rejoice with great joy. The completion of the walls and the restoration of Jerusalem were seen as a fulfillment of God’s promises and a testament to His faithfulness. The people recognised that their joy was a result of God’s intervention and blessing.

Inclusive joy:The joy was not limited to a specific group of people. It extended to all—men, women, and children. The wives and children also rejoiced, indicating that the joy was shared by the entire community. This inclusive joy reflected the unity and solidarity among the people.

Impactful joy:The joy of Jerusalem was so great that it could be heard even afar off. The news of the joyous celebration and the completion of the walls spread beyond the city. The visible demonstration of God’s blessing and the rejoicing of the people made a significant impact on those who heard about it.

Key lessons from Nehemiah 12:43:

  • Recognise God’s faithfulness: The people acknowledged that their joy was a result of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. It is important for us to recognise God’s faithfulness in our own lives and give Him thanks and praise.
  • Share joy with others: The joy in Jerusalem was not limited to a select few; it extended to the entire community. We should strive to share our joy and blessings with others, celebrating together and fostering unity among believers.
  • Impact through testimony: The joy and celebration of the people were so profound that it made an impact on those who heard about it. Our lives and the way we respond to God’s faithfulness can serve as a testimony to others, drawing them closer to Him.
  • Worship and sacrifice: The people expressed their devotion to God through sacrifices and worship. While we no longer offer animal sacrifices, we can offer ourselves as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1) and worship God with our whole being.

Overall, Nehemiah 12:43 reminds us of the importance of joy, unity, and gratitude in our relationship with God and with one another. It encourages us to celebrate God’s faithfulness, share our joy with others, and impact those around us through our testimony of God’s work in our lives.
