Nehemiah 13:19
“And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.”
To understand the significance of this verse, we need to consider the broader context of the book of Nehemiah. Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes, returned to Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile with the king’s permission to rebuild the city walls. He faced various challenges in the process but successfully completed the wall’s reconstruction.
After the wall was rebuilt, Nehemiah focused on restoring the spiritual and social integrity of the people. He confronted issues of intermarriage with foreign nations, addressed the neglect of the Temple, and dealt with economic injustices within the community.
In Nehemiah 13:19, we see Nehemiah’s zealous commitment to honoring the Sabbath day. The Sabbath was a crucial aspect of Jewish religious observance, instituted by God as a day of rest and worship (Exodus 20:8-11). Nehemiah recognised the importance of keeping the Sabbath holy and sought to enforce its observance within the city.
As the verse describes, Nehemiah commanded the gates of Jerusalem to be shut before the Sabbath began. He charged that the gates should not be opened until after the Sabbath, ensuring that no work or burdensome activities would be conducted on this sacred day. Nehemiah assigned some of his servants to guard the gates, preventing any unauthorised entry and ensuring Sabbath observance.
Nehemiah’s actions reflect his dedication to upholding God’s law and preserving the religious identity of the people. By securing the gates and prohibiting the entrance of burdens on the Sabbath, he aimed to protect the sanctity of the day and prevent any violations.
This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of observing and honouring the Sabbath, as well as the commitment required to uphold God’s commandments. It highlights Nehemiah’s determination to restore and maintain the spiritual integrity of the community by faithfully following the laws and regulations given by God.
