Nehemiah 2:11

Listen to this article

“So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.”

Context:The book of Nehemiah tells the story of Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes, who received a burden from God to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. In Nehemiah 2:1-10, Nehemiah approached the king with his request and received permission to go to Jerusalem.

Setting the Stage:

– Nehemiah arrived in Jerusalem: After receiving the king’s permission, Nehemiah embarked on a journey to Jerusalem to assess the state of the city’s walls and begin the rebuilding process.

– Three days: Nehemiah spent three days in Jerusalem, presumably taking time to rest and observe the city before he began his mission.

Observation:

– Nehemiah’s arrival: Nehemiah’s arrival in Jerusalem demonstrates his commitment and determination to fulfill his God-given task. He wasted no time and immediately set out to inspect the walls.

– Three days’ delay: The reason for Nehemiah’s three-day delay is not explicitly mentioned in the verse. It is possible that he needed time to gather his thoughts, assess the situation, and formulate a plan before revealing his intentions to the people.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Preparation and observation:Nehemiah’s three-day stay highlights the importance of preparation and observation before launching into action. Taking time to assess the situation, gather information, and seek God’s guidance can help us make wise decisions and develop effective strategies.
  • Patience and timing:Nehemiah’s delay demonstrates the significance of patience and waiting for the right timing. Sometimes, rushing into action without proper planning can lead to mistakes and inefficiency. Trusting in God’s timing allows for a better outcome.

Practical Application:

  • Seek God’s guidance:Before embarking on significant endeavors, seek God’s guidance through prayer, meditating on His Word, and seeking counsel from wise and godly individuals.
  • Prepare and plan:Take time to prepare and plan, gathering necessary information and resources before taking action. This can help prevent hasty decisions and equip you to face challenges effectively.
  • Trust God’s timing:Practice patience and trust in God’s timing. Sometimes, delays or waiting periods are part of His plan to shape and prepare us for what lies ahead.

Remember that Nehemiah’s story is not only about physical construction but also about the spiritual restoration of God’s people. As we study Nehemiah’s example, we can learn valuable lessons about perseverance, leadership, and seeking God’s will in our own lives.
