Nehemiah 2:4

Listen to this article

“Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.”

This verse occurs at a significant moment in Nehemiah’s life when he approached King Artaxerxes I of Persia to request permission and support for his endeavour to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Let’s examine the context and explore the key lessons we can learn from this verse.

Nehemiah’s Courage:Nehemiah, who served as the cupbearer to the king, held a respected position in the Persian court. Approaching the king to make a personal request was not only an audacious act but also potentially risky. However, Nehemiah displayed great courage by stepping out in faith and sharing his burden for Jerusalem’s restoration.

Seeking God’s Guidance:Before responding to the king’s question, Nehemiah paused and prayed to the God of heaven. This action demonstrates Nehemiah’s reliance on God’s wisdom and guidance in every aspect of his life. By seeking God’s direction, he acknowledged that the success of his mission depended on divine intervention rather than his own abilities.

Importance of Prayer:Nehemiah’s immediate response to the king’s inquiry was to pray. It highlights the importance of seeking God’s guidance and support before making significant decisions or requests. Prayer allows us to align our desires with God’s will, seek His favour, and draw upon His strength.

Trusting God’s Providence:By praying to the God of heaven, Nehemiah acknowledged his dependence on God’s providence. He recognised that his success hinged on God’s intervention, not merely the king’s favour. Nehemiah’s trust in God’s sovereignty enabled him to approach the king with confidence, knowing that the outcome was ultimately in God’s hands.

Faith in Action:Nehemiah’s prayer was not an isolated act but part of a greater narrative of faith. Subsequent verses describe how Nehemiah presented his request to the king and shared his vision for Jerusalem’s restoration. Nehemiah’s prayer fuelled his faith, empowering him to take practical steps towards the fulfilment of his mission.
